Lockdown: Difficulties and Opportunities for Students

Lockdonwn and Education

The pandemic of Corona virus (COVID-19) is not only troubling governments and institutions with this deadly disease but also a large number of different groups are affected by this pandemic and it is not hidden from intellectuals. One of these groups is the students. Among those who have been severely affected by the lock-down are students who will be taking board exams this year. These students have fixed plan of study for future goals and they studied hard to achieve success under this planning.

In India, one or the other board exam starts in the month of February every year. Due to which approx. 40% of the students completed their preparation and they are in waiting for the exam to be held soon so that they can prepare for the competitive exam. So, when the first lockdown was announced the students were happy that they will have more time to study but as the Corona situation became uncertain, the majority of the students became depressed, especially students whose exams have been postponed.

In this condition, students do not need to be depressed but take it positively because this tough situation can also be changed to opportunities to get benefited.

So, take advantage of it and pay attention to those points which are need to improve. Besides that, there is a golden opportunity to get benefited from modern technology. You can watch online lectures and videos on your topics. It will be of great benefit to you and this will also help you to memorize your lesson. You should make sure to don’t waste your time. Many students waste their time by thinking that they have enough time for preparation. They waste their time in games and social media which later will be harmful them. And if you use your time properly; it will be useful for you.

The current situation has triggered the students that now it is very important for us in this developed country to raise our standards in line with the requirements of technology because if we are not well versed in technology, it will be very difficult to use it. Therefore, it is important to understand the technology well and use it properly.

Otherwise, remember that if you ignore time today, time will ignore you and all your future goals will fall from your hands like sand.

Take advantage of this opportunity and make the most of it. As the Messenger of Allah (PBUH) said:

“اِغْتَنِمْ خَمْسًا قَبْلَ خَمْسٍ حَیَاتَکَ قَبْلَ ہَرَمِکَ وَصِحَّتَکَ قَبْلَ سُقْمِکَ وَفَرَاغَکَ قَبْلَ شُغُلِکَ وَشَبَابَکَ قَبْلَ ہَرَمِکَ وَغَناکَ قَبْلَ فَقْرِکْ “

Translation: Consider the five things as booty before the five, life before death and health before sickness and leisure before occupation, and youth before old age, and wealth before poverty. [Mustarak Hakim – 4:306]

In this hadith, it is taught to every believer that the requirement of man’s understanding and wisdom is that he should spend the times of this mortal life with great care and attention, consider life as a booty before he dies. Keep in mind that tomorrow, on the Day of Resurrection, he will be held accountable for everything, he will be questioned about everything and he will have to answer for every word and deed of his. Yes, on the Day of Resurrection, his deeds will be presented before all the first and the last. This time is a very valuable wealth. Whatever benefit can be gained from it, it should be done. Today, we are in good health but don’t know what disease will catch tomorrow. Today we have life, tomorrow will be buried under the soil. Today we have the time, tomorrow we don’t know how much busy we were and what circumstances will be.

نِعْمَتَانِ مَغْبُونٌ فِيْهِمَا كَثِيرٌ مِّنَ النَّاسِ الصِّحَّةُ وَالْفَرَاغُ

Translation: Health and leisure are two great blessings for which many people are at a loss, so it is better for a person to appreciate today than to regret later.         [Bukhari- 2:949; Tirmizi- 2:56]

Today we have got this golden opportunity, tomorrow we will not know what happened and what diseases and disorders will be contracted. Today we have status, we don’t know what will happen tomorrow? Therefore, what is to be achieved should be done, what is to be earned should be accomplished, what is to be taken should be taken. Otherwise, Time is a double-edged sword if you do not cut it, it will cut you.

Appreciation of time and our forefathers:

When we study the biography of our forefathers, it is clear that these gentlemen completed their life’s journey with full consciousness and awareness and spent every moment of his time with great appreciation and restraint. In the same way, when we study about a scientist or a philosopher, etc., every moment of his life is similar to that of those gentlemen. These examples teach us that “Those peoples had done great works; they valued their time”. If we value time today, we will prosper and success by the Almighty help.

For Imam Razi, the importance of time was such that he regretted the time wasted in having meal and not in scholarly pursuits. So he used to say:

وَاللّٰہِ انّي أتَأسَّفُ فِي الْفَوَاتِ عَنِ الْاشْتِغَالِ بِالْعِلْمِ فِيْ وَقْتِ الْأکْلِ فَانَّ الْوَقْتَ وَالزَّمَانَ عَزِیْزٌ۔

Translation: I swear by God, I am sorry for missing out on academic pursuits while eating because time is dear to me.

Appreciation of time made him such a great scholar of logic and philosophy that the world recognized his leadership.

Hafiz Ibn Hajar Asqalani was a great admirer of the time, his time was fully planned, he never sat idle. He was always busy in one of the three hobbies, reading books or composing or worshiping.           [Bustan-ul-Mohadeseen]

A big reason for wasting time:

In today’s phenomena, the biggest reason for wasting precious time of students is the mobile phone or smart phone. This device is common in wasting of hours in social media and other games etc. It has become a common thing now and people never think that my precious time is being wasted. The truth is that they do not worry about their future, they are cheating themselves and keeping in dark to their teachers and their parents.

May Allah, have mercy on them and grant them common sense to understand the value of time and to work hard to make their future bright and radiant and to value the hard-earned money of their families. May Allah Almighty bless those who raise their children by earning halal earning with a lot of hard work. Ameen!!
